What Is More Important to Bass in the Spring, Their Nesting Bed or Their Food?

Are Bass Really Picky in Their Spring Bed?

This is a fascinating video of bass on a nesting bed and how they behave. The underwater shots of the pair of bass are excellent. The video focuses on the action of the bass when presented with a crawfish as bait. Watch as the female tries to feed on the crawfish while the male treats the crawfish as an intruder. After seeing this video you will recognize that the males instinct is protect the eggs during nesting. This instinct is stronger than the urge to eat for these few weeks in the spring.

At one point the female nearly gets the crawfish but the male quickly swims over and pushes her away. Later when the crawfish is placed in the nesting area the male hits the crawfish with his closed mouth to knock it out of the nesting area. The bass later hit on a minnow, showing that he considered the crawfish as a threat to the eggs in the nest, but saw the minnow as food but not aa a threat.

We should remember that fisherman should protect the nests also if we want the bass population to grow or be maintained. Occasionally a pond becomes overcrowded. In that case catching bass around nest could help reduce the bass population to reduce overcrowding.

Watch the video below to see this for yourself! Make sure that you don’t miss the male bass knocking the crawfish off the bed at 3:24!
